Top 10 movies that I saw in 2005(apologies to Munich, Good Night & Good Luck, King Kong and Brokeback Mountain as I have not had the chance to see them yet). Several were realeased in 2004 but I saw them for the first time last year. In no particular order:
- Syriana - see my recent review
- The Sea Inside - great performance by Javier Bardem
- The Machinist - a scary performance by Christian Bale
- Crash - my favorite movie of the last year
- Hotel Rwanda - along with Crash, probably the two most important films I've seen in the last year
- Sin City - the closest thing to a comic book on screen that you will ever see. Stunning visually.
- Serenity - a much better film than Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (which I liked)
- Batman Begins - a nice reinvention of the series with a great cast
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - I like Azkaban more but this was still very good
- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - a faithful adaptation of the spirit of the book.

I don't have a Top 10 movies of 2005.. because only 5 reached my 'Gold Standard' of making my DVD list.

Kingdom of Heaven
The Island
Pride & Prejudice
Serenity
Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit
I liked Kingdom of Heaven also ... more than I thought I would. I saw the Island and like all sci-fi films, I liked it. But I just couldn't get over the fact it was a Michael Bay film.
I think it helped that Scarlett Johannson was in it...
I also enjoyed the freeway chase - almost as much as the one in Matrix-Reloaded.
Pride & prejudice was my 'Movie of the Year' I think, though I really enjoyed Serenity (and am just about to watch the series on DVD - that I bought myself for Christmas)
Believe me, Scarlett Johannson in any movie is a bonus. Plus, I'm a big Ewan McGregor fan. I've heard good things about Pride and Prejudice but haven't seen it yet. Like I've said before, I've read all the Jane Austen books.
P & P is awesome...
Kiera Knightly nails the role of Lizzie. After about 10 minutes I turned to CQ and told her that it had already made my DVD list. I've just recently read the book (my 1st time) and thought it was a very good adaptation.
CQ and I saw it on a huge screen at the local multiplex. Every seat in the 500 seat screen was taken - 99% by women - and you could feel the heart fluters and hear the sighing when Darcy did his thing... It was very funny... We were both walking on air for hours after we left....
One of my friends also bought me the BBC version on DVD which I'll watch one weekend soon. It's six hours long (I think) so I'll probably split it over both days... I'll wait till it rains...
It seems we have similar taste in movies. I finally saw Syriana yesterday, and I really liked it. I am hoping to pick up "See No Evil". Every movie you listed is one I have seen and liked, or its one I want to see and just haven't yet. I saw Brokeback Mountain and Good Night and Good Luck, and liked them both.
I'm glad I was talked into watchin Hotel Rwanda. It was a difficult film to stmah but such avaluable lesson in human cruelty and perseverence.
