Pardon me, your slip is showing

Is it just me, or is the Right getting just a tad bit nervous? They seem to not be doing as good of job of hiding their true nature. Just a few examples:

  • American Legion Declares War on Protestors -- Media Next?

Laughably, they argue that we are endangering freedom by exercising it. I've said it many times before, but blind nationalism is not patriotism. I know that the American Legion doesn't necessarily represent all veterans but it's certainly one of the major faces. What I do think is that broad proclamations like theirs will ultimately hurt their cause. There are enough veterans with an actual brain that will see through it.

And it's so political in nature. They argued the exact opposite of their current position when Clinton was in office and we had troops in Yugoslavia.

I heard an interview with Powell somewhere where he called it (roughly) 'the biggest regret in his life'.

So I think it got to him.

While the fact that Robertson is an idiot, the Bush administration has no social conscience, and a bunch of hard drinking, old, white guys are knee jerk reactionaries is no surprise, the true disappointment of this group is Powell. Rather than stand up for his true beliefs (and his battles with Cheney and Rumsfeld are legendary), he chose to play the good soldier.

Had he followed his conscience and resigned in protest, he could have made a marked impact on the body politic. Instead, he stood by and silently watched the neocons lie and deceive this country into a war that has had devastating effects on Iraq, thousands of American families, and the long term health of the US economy.

In the end, Powell, by his failure of character, bears as much responsibility as anyone for this fiasco. History will, I think, not be kind.

"Why can no one on the right admit a mistake?"

That's funny, because i think the same thing about the left. I guess pride is a bipartisan problem... oh wait, but we already knew that.

JC: I think it's a problem on the wings of both sides. No one on the extremes of any ideology can see their mistakes because their belief in what they're doing is absolute. More rational people, who also tend to make up the middle of the road on both sides, can admit mistakes.

Bush has proven himself to not be able to entertain the thought of mistakes - he hasn't even said "sorry, we screwed up, our intelligence was bad and we'll fire the bastards who led us to believe Sadaam was involved with WMDs and 9/11" He can't do that, because he believes absolutely that the ends justify the means. That's what makes him and his fellow true believers dangerous.

I think dbackdad meant the wingnuts, not anyone right-of-center.

Exactly Laura. One of the most honest ... either side ... is Chuck Hagel. I used to think McCain was also, but I really think he's sold his soul these last few years. I've voted for him twice but will not make the mistake again.

BTW, that bullshit deflector site is great. I had heard about the flaps but had not seen them.

"Why can no one on the right admit a mistake?" -- meant rhetorically, but I'd be more than happy to offer some reasons:

1. They see admitting mistakes as a weakness. Sticking with a mission (doomed or not) come hell or high water is seen as an admirable character trait. Lying, however, is A-OK.

2. They are on a mission from god. "God Bless America, and only America" as they said in Head of State. If God is calling the shots, you can do no wrong.

And I'll be more than happy to ask the Democrats the same question about admitting a mistake the next time they lie us into an unjustified war that kills thousands of innocent people. We "libs" have no problem eating our own because we believe in some thing, not some one. Democrats had no problem protesting Johnson during the Vietnam war.

Actually, i was not trying to be critical with my comment, what was said just amused me so i had to make a comment. No hard feelings taken nor intended.

I'm sorry too. I get too cranky. Sometimes it's hard to sense the tone in which something was written.
